For the purposes of this article i have decided to use 3 week old kittens in the photographic examples in conjunction with diagrams to try and show the clear differences that can be seen in a small kittens genitals.
Below the anus is the genital opening which is round in males and is a vertical slit in females. Notice that the distance between the anus and the opening to the penis in males is bigger in comparison to the distance between the anus and the opening to the vulva in females. Then gently lift up the kitten s tail so you can see its genitals. A female kitten s genitals will resemble an upside down exclamation point with the vertical vaginal slit sitting just below the anus and with very little spacing in between when the cat is upside down and facing you.
Determining the sex gender of a kitten is easy when you know what to look for. In kittens of similar size the distance between the anus and the genital opening is greater in the male than the female. If the opening looks like a tiny circular hole it s a male kitten. Here s a diagram to help. I personally prefer to check them when they are born. If the genital opening looks like a small vertical slit it s a female kitten.
